It's been a bit, but we've been sampling a few different coffees over the past few weeks.
The standout is one that is almost gone from Intelligentsia, but worth mentioning. If you are near a shop and can grab some, do. You will thank me for it later.
Los Inmortales, El Salvador.
Intelligentsia's selectors and roasters have once again delivered an outstanding bean.
Like previous choices it has a very strong but good smell from opening the bag through grinding and brewing.
The coffee is described by Intelli as being "transparent". I call it smooth. It's mellow with a kind of brown sugar edge throughout the whole experience. It actually develops more flavor as it cools down. For a while it was the only iced coffee offered at the Venice shop. And for good reason. This coffee is almost devoid of bitter, with a slight roasted taste on the back end. No acidity to speak of.
I created Lotto a cold brew of it using the aeropress yesterday, and he said it was mellow.
I'll add my cold brew description as a comment to this entry.
I usually like my coffee hot, when it cools down I add hot water to get it back up to drinking temperature. But on this one I started to drink some that was lukewarm, and I ended up draining the rest of the cup, over half of it, in a few seconds. It was really good.

So "toddy" style cold brewing with the aeropress.
ReplyDelete1. grind the beans on coarse setting following the toddy instructions.
2. Put 4 aeropress scoops into an "inverted" aeropress with the plunger pulled as close to the "4" end of the tube as you can get.
3. Slowly add cold water and stir until the mixture is to the "top" of the tube. Carefully put the "top" on with 2 filters in it to help keep the water from dissipating over the 12-14 hours that it sits brewing.
4. sometime in the middle of the brewing give it another stir session to make sure the coffee hasn't floated to the top of the water.
5. 12-14 hours later plunge the cold coffee syrup into a cup, and add water/milk/sugar to taste.
I like a 1 part syrup to 3 parts water. A good strong kick in the pants.
The above should make a good strong 16oz cup of coffee if you mix it 1 part syrup to 3 parts water. I plunge it into a 16 oz cup add 2 oz milk and top it off with water.
Hot or cold it's a good drink.
